Early members of the OETT will remember James (Jim) Harris as one of the original band of hard workers who helped the OETT in it's formative years. Jim was unfortunately killed along with his passenger Stephen Morrell when the De Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth he was flying crashed in an accident in the Taieri Gorge. The accident occurred near the Reefs Hotel about 5:00 pm on the 27th September 1997, in the full view, to their horror, of passengers on the afternoon Taieri Gorge Limited . The train stopped and some passengers including a doctor who was on the train tried to assist, but there was little that could be done for those on the plane.
Jim was very close to his mother Iris and the events outlined above very much affected her. She had to bear a lot of pain during this period, may she rest in peace.
If you are interested you can read a report on the accident here
